Why Brands Are Racing to Appear in AI Answers Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your brand easy for AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Mode to find, trust and recommend. In AI search, people often get one synthesised answer instead of ten blue links, so if your brand isn't named in that answer, you're invisible at the moment of decision. Ask ChatGPT for "the best project management tool for a small agency" and you won't get a page of links to compare. You'll get a short, confident answer that names three or four products, explains why, and maybe cites a couple of sources. If your product is one of those names, you've just been recommended at the exact moment someone was ready to choose. If it isn't, the buyer may never know you exist. That's the shift behind **Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)**, and it's why marketing teams that spent a decade on SEO are now asking a new question: *what does AI say about us?* ## What is AEO? **Answer Engine Optimization is the work of making your brand findable, quotable and trustworthy to AI systems that answer questions directly**, including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews, Gemini, Claude, Grok and Microsoft Copilot. You'll also see it called **GEO** (Generative Engine Optimization) or **LLM visibility**. The labels differ; the goal is the same. When someone asks an AI a question your brand should be part of, you want to be: 1. **Mentioned**: your brand is named in the answer. 2. **Recommended**: named favourably, ideally early. 3. **Cited**: your own pages, or trusted pages about you, are linked as sources. ## Why AEO matters now Three things changed at the same time. **People ask instead of search.** Questions to AI assistants are long, specific and conversational: "Which link shortener lets me use my own domain and track sales from Instagram?" These are high-intent questions, the kind that used to sit at the bottom of a sales funnel. **Answers replace results.** A search results page shows ten options and lets you choose. An AI answer has already chosen. Being fifth on page one used to be worth something; being left out of a four-brand answer is worth nothing. **Your competitors can be recommended instead of you.** AI answers are comparative by nature. When a model lists alternatives, every brand it names is taking attention that could have been yours. ## How an answer engine decides which brands to mention Each engine works differently, but the broad pattern is shared. The model blends what it learned during training with what it retrieves live from the web, then writes a single answer. ![How an AI answer engine builds an answer: query fan-out, source retrieval, training knowledge and synthesis](/__l5e/assets-v1/aca58769-f416-479d-bb73-b8c0fb966ecd/how-answer-engines-pick-brands-inline.svg) That gives you two levers: - **Training knowledge** builds slowly. It reflects how often, how consistently and how positively your brand has been discussed across the web over time. - **Live retrieval** moves faster. If the pages an engine retrieves for a question mention you clearly and credibly, you can appear in answers within weeks. One more detail matters a lot: **AI answers aren't fixed.** Ask the same question twice and you may get a different set of brands. That's why serious AEO measurement asks each question several times and reports how *often* a brand appears, not whether it appeared once. ## AEO vs SEO: what's actually different? AEO isn't a replacement for SEO. Most engines still lean on web search to find sources, so strong SEO foundations help. But the target and the scoreboard are different. | | SEO | AEO | | --- | --- | --- | | **Goal** | Rank a page in search results | Be named, recommended and cited in an AI answer | | **Unit of success** | Position of *your page* | Presence of *your brand* in the answer | | **Query style** | Short keywords | Long, conversational questions | | **Who's competing** | Ten results on a page | Three to five brands inside one answer | | **Off-site signals** | Backlinks | Mentions, reviews, comparisons, citations | | **Result stability** | Fairly stable day to day | Varies run to run; measure frequency | | **Measurement** | Rankings, impressions, clicks | Mention rate, position in answer, share of voice, citations, sentiment | ## The AEO playbook: what actually moves the needle There's no secret switch. AEO rewards the same things a knowledgeable human researcher would reward. ### 1. Answer the real questions, directly Find the questions your buyers ask AI ("best X for Y", "X vs Y", "how do I…") and publish pages that answer them in the first two sentences, then go deep. Clear headings, short paragraphs, tables and FAQs make your content easy to quote. ### 2. Be present where engines look for evidence AI engines trust consensus. Being mentioned on review sites, comparison articles, community forums, industry newsletters and partner pages often counts for more than anything on your own site. **Third-party mentions are the backlinks of AEO.** ### 3. Make your site machine-readable - Let AI crawlers in. Check that your `robots.txt` doesn't block GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and similar agents unless you mean to. - Render your content server-side, so it exists without JavaScript. - Add accurate structured data (Organization, Product, Article, FAQ). - Consider an `llms.txt` file that points AI systems at your most useful pages. ### 4. Be consistent about who you are Use the same brand name, description, domain and product names everywhere: your site, social profiles, directories and press. Inconsistency makes it harder for a model to be confident that all those mentions refer to the same entity. ### 5. Measure, then iterate You can't improve what you can't see. Track a fixed set of important questions across several engines, run them repeatedly, and watch your mention rate, your position and the competitors that appear instead of you. ## Where your domain fits: branded links and brand authenticity Here's a part of AEO that rarely gets discussed: **the links you share every day are brand signals too.** Every campaign link you post on social, every newsletter CTA, every QR code and every link in a partner's article is a small, public piece of evidence about your brand. The domain on that link decides whose brand it reinforces. - `bit.ly/3xYz9Q` reinforces a link shortener's brand, not yours. - `go.yourbrand.com/spring-guide` reinforces **yours**, every single time it's shared. ![The branded-link visibility flywheel: shared branded links lead to brand repetition, trusted clicks, web mentions and AI citations](/__l5e/assets-v1/a1807b13-ac31-4ee2-98a1-aa5821b17adc/branded-link-flywheel-inline.svg) To be precise about what a branded domain does and doesn't do: **What it does** - **Keeps your brand on every shared link.** Across thousands of posts, emails, forum replies and printed QR codes, your brand name appears consistently instead of a third-party domain. - **Builds trust and click-through.** People are more willing to click a link that clearly belongs to the brand they know. Generic shortener domains are also more often treated with suspicion by readers, and sometimes by spam filters. - **Strengthens entity consistency.** One domain, used everywhere, is easier for any system, human or AI, to connect back to a single, real brand. - **Makes AI-driven traffic measurable.** When answer engines and readers pass along your tracked links, you can see which clicks, leads and sales came from them. **What it doesn't do** - A custom short domain is **not a ranking hack**. No engine promises extra visibility for using one. It works by compounding trust and consistency over time, alongside the playbook above. > [!TIP] > Use a short subdomain of your main site (`go.`, `link.` or `l.`) rather than an unrelated domain. It keeps the connection to your primary brand obvious to people and to machines. ## How to measure AI traffic you already get AI assistants are already sending visitors to many sites, and much of it is hard to see. - **ChatGPT** typically appends `utm_source=chatgpt.com` to links it cites, so those visits can show up in your analytics. - **Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot** and others often pass a referrer, but not always. - **In-app and mobile traffic** frequently arrives with no referrer at all, showing up as "direct". Branded, tracked short links help close that gap. If the link someone copies from an answer, a social post or a community thread is one of your tracked links, the click is recorded with its source, and on platforms that support it, so is the lead or sale that follows. ## How CutMe Short fits in CutMe Short started as a link management platform, and branded links and attribution sit at its core: **custom domains**, UTM-tagged short links, QR codes and **click-to-lead-to-sale tracking**. We recently launched **AEO Studio** to cover the other half of the problem: seeing how AI engines talk about your brand. It audits how ready your website is for AI crawlers and citations, then tracks a set of real buyer questions across the models behind ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and others on an automatic weekly schedule. It shows how often you're mentioned compared with your competitors and flags what to fix next. AEO stands for **Answer Engine Optimization**: optimising your brand and content to be mentioned, recommended and cited by AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Claude. ### Is AEO the same as GEO? Mostly, yes. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and AEO describe the same goal of visibility in AI-generated answers. Some people use AEO more broadly to include voice assistants and featured snippets, but in practice the terms are used interchangeably. ### Does AEO replace SEO? No. Many AI engines use web search to find their sources, so good SEO still helps. AEO adds new goals (being named inside an answer rather than ranking a page) and new metrics such as mention rate and share of voice. ### How long does AEO take to work? Answers that rely on live web retrieval can change within weeks of new, well-placed content or mentions. What a model "knows" from training changes more slowly, over months. Consistent effort compounds. ### Why do AI answers mention different brands each time? AI models generate answers probabilistically, so wording and the brands named can vary between runs, engines and even days. That's why AEO tools ask each question multiple times and report how often your brand appears. ### Does a custom domain help my brand appear in AI answers? Not directly, as a ranking factor. Indirectly, it helps: every shared link carries your brand instead of a generic shortener's, which builds recognition, trust and consistent entity signals across the web, and lets you measure the traffic those answers send. --- Source: https://www.cutmeshort.com/blog/what-is-answer-engine-optimization-aeo · CutMe Short (https://www.cutmeshort.com)
